What Is Blister Packaging?
You can find blister packaging everywhere! It's the customary unit packaging out there. So, what is blister packaging? I'm sure you're familiar with blister packaging, even if you don't realize it.
In your mind's eye, take a walk down the children's section of your local store. See the action figures and dolls in their little plastic bubbles looking out at you!? That's blister packaging! Blister packaging is used for all types of products. You can find blister packaging anywhere in a store! ..In the tools, automotive, media and technology, or household isles. Every consumer knows the product they purchase has to come in packaging and it's most likely plastic. Packaging keeps a product safe in transit. Blister Packaging is tamper-proof while at the same time letting the consumer see almost all angles of the product.
The clamshell, a type of blister packaging, is genius for tamper proof. It's impossible to get to whatever is inside without destroying the whole packaging! And can you imagine someone trying to shop-lift a clamshell under their jacket. Ha, highly unlikely!
How is blister packaging made?
Blister packaging is usually made from pvc (poly-vinyl-chloride)--a cheap material that fills a great purpose! PVC is thin enough to not weigh much in shipping, to be easily opened, but not too easily opened to contaminate or injure the product it holds. A roll of this pvc plastic is heated enough to roll over blister packaging molds to form the little 000 blisters. The pvc cools and is ready to be cut and used. (You can see why it is inexpensive and once you have a mold made it's very inexpensive to continue to make blister packaging for that particular blister mold.
Blister packaging that folds with two sides of the plastic pvc is called a clamshell. Other blister packaging will have one side of blister packaging plastic which is then glued or form fill sealed to a cardboard backing. The same one-sided blister packing can also be sealed with a cold form foil stamped into the back. This cold form foil is most often used for pharmaceutical purposes. You know those pills in the little bubbles that you push through the little foil at the back? That's blister packaging with a cold form foil form fill seal.
Blister packaging is very common and probably most convenient in the pharmaceutical world. Think of the last time you took a pain-killer. If you take pain-killer or medication often you might use those little blister cards. You know the one with the little 000 blisters filled with the stuff you need. A blister card is really easy to carry around in your purse or wallet. It keeps the contents within each blister free from contamination and holds up to pressure so that pills don't turn to powder. Blister packaging also lengthens the shelf-life of medication and many other products that benefit from being stored in an air-tight container.
